Villa Huesgen

The villa, home to the eponymous winery, is a true symbol of the Huesgen family's long winemaking tradition. The building, dating back to 1904, is an Art Nouveau gem designed by Bruno Möhring. The family's winemaking tradition is even older, dating back to the 18th century. Today, the harvest continues to be carried out by hand with a rigorous selection of the bunches. In the cellar, only indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation. All this results in exceptional Rieslings that reflect both tradition and terroir.

Villa Huesgen

The winery owns several vineyards, with the most prestigious including Trabener Würzgarten, Enkircher Steffensberg, and Enkircher. These vineyards are situated on very steep slopes oriented to the south and southwest, where the vines root in slate soils.

Region and territory

One of the northernmost wine-growing regions in Europe, beyond the 51st parallel

Moselle

One of the northernmost wine-growing regions in Europe, beyond the 51st parallel

Moselle

One of the northernmost wine-growing regions in Europe, beyond the 51st parallel

Moselle

Viticulture in Germany was introduced by the Romans around the 1st century BC, right on the left bank of the Rhine and along the Moselle. The Moselle is one of the northernmost wine-growing regions in Europe, beyond the 51st parallel, even further north than Alsace and Champagne.

The cold climate results in musts rich in acidity, which not only makes the numerous sweet and Eiswein wines produced in Germany balanced and harmonious, but also gives the local wines a truly unique freshness. The region extends along the course of the eponymous river, from the French border to the point where the Moselle and the Rhine converge, and includes the areas around the two tributary rivers: the Saar and the Ruwer.

Vineyards are generally planted on south-facing slopes to take advantage of the sun and allow the grapes to ripen on steep slopes with inclines of up to 70%. Moselle Rieslings are characterized by an excellent balance and pronounced freshness, which contribute to their great longevity. A peculiarity of Moselle wines is the bottles they are contained in: unlike other German wines, they are bottled in green Rhine bottles instead of brown ones.

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer

Recommended pairings and dishes

Matching by concordance

The fresh structure, delicate aromatics, and medium body pair well by analogy with fragrant, not overly structured dishes. The citrus and mineral notes echo ingredients with a similar aromatic profile, such as fresh herbs, citrus fruits, or even light marinades.

Matching by contrast

The fine bubbles and balanced acidity offset the sweetness of dishes like shellfish and seafood, the richness of cheeses, and temper the saltiness of marinated or smoked ingredients. The lively effervescence cleanses the palate and pleasantly contrasts even slightly oily or creamy dishes.

It pairs well with

Appetizers, fish, shellfish, cheeses, delicate fish-based first courses, light vegetarian dishes, and flavorful aperitifs.
