Production and refinement

We are in Ventotene, a tiny volcanic island off the coast of Lazio, in the heart of the State Nature Reserve. On just 2 hectares of vineyards cultivated with respect for the environment, between 30 and 50 meters above sea level, falanghina, fiano, and greco alternate, trained with the guyot system and facing south to ensure maximum sun exposure. The soil composition — sandy, volcanic, rich in microelements — and the sea breezes that constantly cross the island make the vines perfectly balanced, in a unique microclimate. The harvest takes place at the beginning of September, when the grapes have reached the right balance between sugar maturity and acidity.

Fermentation and aging take place exclusively in steel tanks, with a 6-month period on fine lees to enrich the wine’s structure and complexity, followed by 2 months in bottle. The result is a wine that retains energy and freshness, yet is also able to develop further after several years in the bottle.

Candidaterra

Founded in 2013, the winery owes its name, Candidaterra, to the island’s patron saint, Santa Candida, as well as to its commitment to absolute respect for the land—a pure land, free of chemical products—in accordance with the regulations protecting the Ventotene and Santo Stefano Islands Nature Reserve.

The rows of Greco, Fiano, and Falanghina, planted between 2013 and 2016 and trained in the Guyot system, face south for complete and constant sun exposure.

Candidaterra

The Sportiello brothers, Luigi and Ercolino, oversee the entire production cycle: from vineyard cultivation to winemaking, from processing in the cellar to bottling and subsequent marketing. However, before reaching their first vintage in the bottle, the brothers underwent a long apprenticeship that lasted years.

Currently, the vineyard covers just 2 hectares (out of the island’s total 189 hectares) on volcanic soils in the central part of the island, situated between 30 and 50 meters above sea level.

Lazio

The history of viticulture in Lazio is closely linked to its past and dates back to Roman times when the region was already known for the production of prestigious wines such as Falerno and Caecubum. In recent years, viticulture in Lazio has focused on quality and is characterized by the use of sustainable agricultural techniques, which preserve soil biodiversity and improve grape characteristics.
Wine production in Lazio is an important economic resource for the region, contributing to wine tourism and the enhancement of the region's cultural and landscape heritage.

Viticulture in Lazio extends over a vast territory, including the hills south of Rome, the areas of the Colli Albani and Castelli Romani, and the more inland areas of the region, such as the province of Frosinone.
The climate, characterized by mild and humid winters and hot, dry summers, is an important factor in wine production, influencing grape ripening and their resistance to fungal diseases. The geological composition of Lazio's soil is highly varied, characterized by great heterogeneity. Along the coast, there is predominantly alluvial soil, while inland, volcanic, limestone, and clayey soils can be found. This diversity of soils favors the cultivation of numerous grape varieties, each of which thrives best in certain types of terrain.

Ventotene Island

The island of Ventotene, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a small volcanic island that is part of the Pontine archipelago, south of Rome. Viticulture on the island has a long history dating back to antiquity and has contributed to the production of some prized wines.

Viticulture on the island is mainly focused on the cultivation of the "Biancolella" grapevine, an indigenous variety that gives rise to dry and aromatic white wines. The island's soil is particularly fertile due to the presence of volcanic rocks, which impart a unique mineral flavor to the wine.

The isolated location and proximity to the sea significantly influence the island's climate, which is mild and Mediterranean, characterized by temperate and humid winters and hot and dry summers. These climatic conditions favor the cultivation of vines, which represent one of the main agricultural activities on the island. The vines are planted on hilly terrain, characterized by sandy and rocky soil that ensures adequate drainage and good ventilation.

Among volcanic rocks and sea breezes, the island reaches for the sky with its prized wines.
