Production and refinement

Fiorduva is made from a blend of Ripoli (40%), Fenile (30%) and Ginestra (30%), indigenous grape varieties grown in Furore and the surrounding municipalities. The vineyards are located on coastal terraces at elevations ranging from 200 to 550 metres, with south-facing exposure and soils characterised by dolomitic and limestone rock. The vines are trained using the pergola, atypical radial and trellised systems, with planting densities ranging from 5,000 to 7,000 vines per hectare. Yields are approximately 6 tonnes of grapes per hectare. Harvesting is carried out by hand in the third ten-day period of October, when the grapes are overripe. They are quickly transported to the winery to ensure they arrive intact.

After harvesting, the grapes undergo gentle pressing to obtain the free-run juice, which is then cold-settled to clarify. Fermentation takes place in oak barriques using selected yeasts at a temperature of approximately 12°C over a period of around three months. The wine is then aged in barriques for six months.

Organoleptic analysis

Visual exam

Intense, bright straw yellow, with golden highlights that reflect the ripeness of the grapes and the wine’s richness.

Olfactory examination

Broad and complex on the nose, with notes of ripe apricot, peach, exotic fruit and raisins, accompanied by broom flowers, white blossoms and citrus aromas. Delicate hints of spice, ginger, white pepper and honey also emerge, alongside a subtle mineral and saline character that evokes its coastal terroir.

Tasting

Soft, enveloping and full-bodied on the palate, with good freshness and pronounced salinity that balance the richness of the fruit. Notes of dried apricot, raisins and candied fruit, perceived on the nose, return on the palate, accompanied by intense aromatic persistence and a long, citrusy, mineral finish.

Marisa Cuomo

The history of Marisa Cuomo winery dates back to 1942, when the Gran Furor Divina Costiera brand was established, associated with the marketing of wines produced in the vineyards perched on the cliffs overlooking the sea in Furore. In 1980, Andrea Ferraioli, a descendant of a family of local winemakers, acquired the brand and dedicated the winery to his wife, Marisa Cuomo, launching a project focused on preserving the Amalfi Coast’s viticultural heritage and producing high-quality wines.

Today, the estate covers approximately 10 hectares in a dramatic and spectacular landscape, where the vineyards cling to steep cliffs overlooking the sea, exposed to the sun and the sea breezes of the Gulf of Salerno. The rugged terrain makes viticulture particularly challenging and gives the wines a strong connection to their coastal environment. The winery itself, carved into the rock, also reflects the deep relationship between wine production and the surrounding landscape.

Marisa Cuomo

Andrea and Marisa, together with their children Raffaele and Dorotea, continue to develop a project that combines the revival of ancient indigenous grape varieties, the knowledge passed down by local winemakers, and modern winemaking techniques. Grape selection and careful attention to ripeness, freshness and ageing are central to the winery’s philosophy.

Campania

Viticulture in Campania has its roots in ancient Greek tradition, when numerous grape varieties now considered native were introduced by the Hellenics. Powdery mildew and phylloxera arrived later than elsewhere, but the damage was enormous, and the path to quality was only taken from the 1980s onwards.
Recently, Campanian wines have seen incredible success thanks to a production characterized by traditional agriculture, with a strong focus on environmental preservation and sustainability. Many of Campania's wineries are family-owned and produce high-quality wines in small quantities.

In general, Campanian viticulture is characterized by a great variety of terroirs and native varieties, which give rise to wines of great quality and personality, each with its own unique characteristics. For many years, the imposing Taurasi DOCG was the only wine to be awarded the DOCG status, but since 2003, Greco di Tufo DOCG and Fiano di Avellino DOC have also been recognized, and since 2011, Aglianico del Taburno has also been honored with this designation. In the rest of the region, there are also 15 DOC and 10 IGT wines.

Salerno

The province of Salerno is extremely interesting from a viticultural point of view: within the protected area are some of the most important wineries in Campania. Wineries that, within a few years, have gained international renown and achieved significant quality levels.

Vegetation plays a crucial role in the ecosystem. In fact, Monte Tuoro, in the highest part, is characterized by the dominant presence of beech trees, while as you descend, chestnut, oak, and mountain maple trees make their way. Another significant aspect is the presence of numerous springs that give rise to streams that mostly flow downstream. The vineyards, therefore, integrate into this environment and benefit from it.

In the province of Salerno, there are these denominations: Paestum IGT and Campania IGT.

The province of Salerno is a viticultural jewel, with some of the most important wineries in Campania.
