National identity and cultural symbol

Today, wine represents a key element of South Africa's cultural and gastronomic identity. After the end of apartheid in 1991 and the election of Nelson Mandela in 1994 , the wine industry underwent a profound transformation : no longer bulk wines or brandies, but noble grape varieties destined for quality products, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Pinotage, capable of satisfying international tastes.

Exports have grown rapidly: between 1998 and 2003, they doubled and now account for over 35% of domestic production. The global market has thus helped strengthen the reputation of South African wines, which now compete internationally with both fresh, aromatic whites and structured, complex reds.

Wine has become a true “cultural ambassador” of the country, reflecting the diversity of terroirs, the richness of winemaking traditions, and the innovation of modern producers.
